Slowing housing market results in weaker but still respectable growth

Sales through home and garden specialist retailers expanded at a respectable clip for a third successive year in 2018, but the rate of progress was noticeably slower compared to 2017. The relatively softer performance was due largely to weaker growth in homewares and home furnishing stores.

Kitchens and floors/carpets most sensitive to home ownership changes

While trends in the housing market continued to play an important role for homewares and home furnishing stores, not all were equally exposed as some types of home furnishing products are more likely to be purchased after moving into a new home. For example, approximately one in every two kitchens and new floors/carpets were sold upon moving into a new home.

Lower but more sustainable growth in home improvement and gardening stores

Home improvement and gardening specialist retailers registered more moderate growth than their homewares and home furnishing counterparts over the review period, but their growth may prove to be more sustainable in the long term. In particular, home improvement centres and gardening stores are expected to maintain sales growth throughout the forecast period.

Intergamma BV stays ahead of Ikea BV

Domestic company Intergamma BV remained the leading player in home improvement and gardening stores, where it featured prominently with its popular Gamma and Karwei brands. In a home improvement and gardening specialists channel marked by a decline in outlets, Intergamma BV retained its share by managing to keep the number of its Gamma and Karwei stores steady.

Former Blokker brand Leenbakker sees outlet count shrink

Following domestic non-grocery retail powerhouse Blokker Nederland BV’s announcement that it would divest itself of most of its brands in 2017, the company sold the home furnishings store chain Leenbakker to Dutch retail investment firm Gilde Equity Management, which among others already held a stake in Kwantum, another popular home furnishings store chain.

Maxeda BV announces rebranding of Formido stores to Praxis stores

The decline in outlets among home and garden specialist retailers also led to greater consolidation among chains. In this vein, Maxeda BV announced that it would gradually phase out its Formida brand and rebrand its Formido stores as Praxis stores, as Praxis has long been the more popular of the two brands owned by the company.
