Overall, the future of homeshopping does not look promising in Singapore due to the growing popularity of e-commerce. With a very high internet penetration rate in Singapore, senior citizens are becoming more comfortable with technology and using the web to buy products.
The introduction of the Go Shop homeshopping channel in collaboration with Starhub by Malaysian television network Astro in late 2016 was thought to be a threat to other homeshopping channels in Singapore but has not proven to be dangerous thus far.
The new Astro channel is not expected to pose a challenge in the coming years due to already plateauing sales. While Astro’s attempt to expand its reach in Singapore by developing new partnerships across platforms like Mediacorp has seen a rise in the number of viewers, it is not significantly contributing to sales in value terms and is not predicted to do so in the future.
Although Astros’ tactics have proven successful in its homeland Malaysia, homeshopping no longer generates large amounts of sales in Singapore.
