Homeshopping sales inch upwards but remain insignificant

The reason why homeshopping, though outdated, still registered a slight increase in sales in 2018 is because of Singapore’s ageing population. Senior citizens in Singapore, who tend to watch a lot of television in their spare time, form the bulk of the target market that homeshopping caters to.

Embracing of innovation and technology helps to boost demand

The fact that homeshopping has now become more innovative, developed a more seamless transition on television, and has easier call-to-action options has facilitated the senior population in easily ordering products.

Growing competition from e-commerce

Overall, the future of homeshopping does not look promising in Singapore due to the growing popularity of e-commerce. With a very high internet penetration rate in Singapore, senior citizens are becoming more comfortable with technology and using the web to buy products.

Launch of Astro’s homeshopping channel

The introduction of the Go Shop homeshopping channel in collaboration with Starhub by Malaysian television network Astro in late 2016 was thought to be a threat to other homeshopping channels in Singapore but has not proven to be dangerous thus far.

No threat so far to stagnating area

The new Astro channel is not expected to pose a challenge in the coming years due to already plateauing sales. While Astro’s attempt to expand its reach in Singapore by developing new partnerships across platforms like Mediacorp has seen a rise in the number of viewers, it is not significantly contributing to sales in value terms and is not predicted to do so in the future.

Limited scope for further growth in Singapore

Although Astros’ tactics have proven successful in its homeland Malaysia, homeshopping no longer generates large amounts of sales in Singapore.
