The total number of hypermarkets in Russia has been in decline since 2018 and the situation continued to deteriorate in 2021. This pattern is in part due to a trend towards reduce selling space to the level of supermarkets.
Lenta OOO continued to invest in the expansion of its store network at the end of the review period opening five more hypermarkets in 2020 and one more in 2021. Lenta benefits from offering entertainment, which includes foodservice and playrooms for kids, a wide diversity of products, its own bakery, while its outlets are also open 24 hours.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the penetration of e-commerce into the grocery space lagged behind other areas of retailing such as apparel and footwear and electronics. However, online grocery shopping witnessed a significant boost in 2020 as consumers sought to comply with lockdown restrictions, while ongoing home seclusion in 2021 continued to support e-commerce.
Hypermarkets were hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic with consumers shifting to other channels for their retailing needs. With key players such as X5 Retail Group NV, Auchan Group SA and Internationale Spar Centrale BV all looking to reduce their number hypermarkets outlets over the forecast period the prospects for the channel look bleak.
While the primary purpose of a trip to the hypermarket is to purchase groceries, these stores also offer consumers the opportunity to take a short break from, for example, work, home, or the kids. Some consumers also visit these stores for a new experience, or to purchase something special for a friend or relative, while at the same time shopping for essential goods.
The penetration of food and drinks e-commerce is still negligible in many regions of Russia. Meanwhile, international sanctions and Russian countersanctions continues to limit the variety of goods on offer and the availability of high-quality groceries.
