Following 2020 in which ice cream and frozen desserts benefitted from the pandemic and the resultant trends of indulgence and consumption-at-home, this category’s retail value growth will slow in 2021. Especially frozen desserts, bulk dairy ice cream and multi-pack dairy ice cream benefitted from the home seclusion trend in 2020; however, these categories will not have a repeat performance in 2021 and retail value sales growth will decelerate completely.
The indulgence trend and robust demand for dairy-based products resulted in healthy demand for ice cream in 2020 and the first half of 2021, even for products such as single portion dairy ice cream that are generally impulse buys. Consequently, demand for take-home dairy ice cream hampers the performance of take-home water ice cream in 2021 and the latter category will see decreased retail value sales growth.
Unilever Austria GmbH continues to be the main manufacturer in ice cream and frozen desserts. Its Magnum, Cremissimo and Cornetto lines continue to be the leading brands.
After a surge in the retail sales volume and value performances of ice cream and frozen desserts in 2020 as a result of the pandemic, retail value sales (at constant 2021 prices) decelerated rapidly in 2021 and are expected to generally slow year-on-year over the forecast period. A significant trend reversal is expected as consumers revert to pre-pandemic lifestyles in the short term.
Demand for organic ice cream and frozen desserts is set to remain high during the forecast period. Furthermore, strong development is expected in ice cream free from lactose and reduced-fat or -sugar varieties, a category whose size remains small in 2021, but is showing growing potential, in line with the health and wellness and natural ingredients trends.
As consumers’ consumption patterns return to pre-pandemic levels in the short term, companies are expected to focus on innovations to maintain interest in their products, often in the direction of healthier options, higher quality and/or more exotic ingredients. Players are also constantly looking for ways to change the perception of ice cream as a seasonal product to something to be enjoyed all year round.
