Demand for indulgence packaged food is expected to increase in Cameroon over the forecast period as the population becomes more affluent and tastes become more sophisticated. This is likely to be of benefit to sales of ice cream and frozen desserts, with the category set to register stronger value growth than over the review period in constant 2018 terms, while volume growth is set to remain commensurate with review period growth rates.
One constraint on growth in sales of ice cream and frozen desserts in recent years has been that relatively few retail outlets have the appropriate storage and display equipment for frozen food. This has largely limited distribution to supermarkets, with independent small grocers and other grocery retailers having a much smaller distribution presence in the category.
Single portion dairy ice cream and bulk dairy ice cream are the dominant categories in ice cream and frozen desserts and these product areas are expected to continue leading sales and driving growth in ice cream over the forecast period. The only other category with significant sales, bulk water ice cream, has been experiencing falling sales for some time and this negative trend is expected to continue developing over the forecast period, reinforcing the dominance of single-portion and bulk dairy ice cream.
Ice cream and frozen desserts remains a highly-fragmented category in which brands often struggle to establish a very strong position due to retail distribution being largely limited to supermarkets. This is also one of the reasons for the very strong position of private label in the category, with private label leading the category again in 2018.
Fresh Products Corp remains the leading branded player in ice cream and frozen desserts. The company has developed an extensive distribution network for its impulse ice cream, focusing on mobile street vendors and kiosks and benefiting from the longstanding presence of its Freshco brand.
Premium brands continue to struggle to make any impact in ice cream and frozen desserts and this is primarily due to their high prices, which make them unattainable for the majority of Cameroon’s population. Premium brands are sold exclusively in high-end supermarkets and their main appeal is their long-established reputations for indulgence and high quality.
