COVID-19 saw sales growth slow in 2020, as restrictions on movement thanks to quarantine impacted demand for impulse, on-the-go ice cream products. However, this was largely offset by an increase in take-home ice cream.
Modern grocery retailers continue to increase their market share of ice cream and frozen dessert in 2021. The easing of pandemic restrictions has seen a return to consumers buying single impulse dairy ice cream from informal roadside vendors, but the ongoing investment in new modern grocery retail outlets continues to shift consumer shopping patterns.
Cameroon continues to see ongoing growth in private label, as the country’s retail landscape evolves. Almost 90% of the country’s chained distribution channels offer some form of private label.
Growth in ice cream and frozen desserts has historically been constrained by the fact that relatively few retail outlets have had appropriate storage and display equipment for frozen food. This has limited distribution to supermarkets and ice cream specialists in urban areas, such as Nice Cream, Delice and Le Glacier Moderne, with independent small grocers and other grocery retailers having a much smaller distribution presence.
Although local brands are most popular in Cameroon thanks to their competitive pricing and widespread distribution, imported brands are anticipated to improve their performance over the forecast period. In part, this will be a result of the stabilisation of supply lines as the country emerges from the pandemic.
The market for ice cream in Cameroon is set to see increasing formalisation over the forecast period, which will help support sales development in the long term. Roadside ice cream vending is gradually losing market share to formal sales, partly of because of shifting consumer habits, evolving retail networks and consumer preferences, but also because the government is beginning to crack down on these roadside vendors.
