Ice cream and frozen desserts fared reasonably well over the time of the pandemic, managing to remain in marginally positive value growth in 2020, albeit falling into small negative figures in volume terms. In 2021, value has again increased and volume is back in small positive rates too.
Brands such as Popsy (from Comercial Allan Ltda) have ice cream parlours around Colombia and are also present in supermarkets and hypermarkets. As such, the brand explored new strategies to reach consumers during the time of restrictions which impacted trade via on-trade channels.
Meals de Colombia SA is maintaining its strong lead in ice cream and frozen desserts in 2021, thanks to its unchallenged Crem Helado brand. The player’s success is due to its ability to innovate to meet changing consumer demands and trends, and developing products which bring the experience of ice cream parlours to households.
Impulse purchases of dairy ice cream typically take place at small independent grocers and neighbourhood businesses such as chemists. Such channels were restricted during the time of the pandemic, however, as pre-pandemic lifestyles resume, impulse purchases of this type will make a comeback.
Despite players taking advantage of online platforms and delivery channels during the time of the pandemic, e-commerce is not expected to become a relevant channel for ice cream over the forecast period. This is because ice cream is predominantly an impulse purchase as opposed to being included on standard shopping lists, alongside the fact that, outside of the pandemic restrictions, ice cream is mostly consumed away from home.
Changes in consumption habits, with people spending more time at home, are likely to motivate the development of consumer foodservice inspired products. An example comes from Crepes & Waffles, predominantly a consumer foodservice operator, who has been selling packaged ice cream from its premises for a number of years.
