Having plunged by more than one fifth during 2020, retail current value sales of ice cream and dairy desserts are set to rebound strongly during 2021. This will reflect a partial loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, which will boost impulse purchasing and on-the-go consumption.
Traditional grocery retailers – food/drink/tobacco specialists and independent small grocers – continue to dominate the distribution of ice cream, but prior to the onset of the pandemic, their retail value share had been coming under pressure from modern grocery retail outlets – supermarkets, hypermarkets, discounters, forecourt retailers and convenience stores – the number of which expanded significantly during the review period.
Nestlé Egypt SAE continues to dominate ice cream, but its retail value share declined significantly during the latter part of the review period. This was mainly due to increased competition from local players like AMR Ice Cream Co and Hawaii for Industry & Trade.
There will be modest growth in retail volume sales and retail constant value sales of ice cream and dairy desserts over the course of the forecast period. This will be driven in large part by an anticipated post-pandemic economic rebound, which will boost consumer confidence.
Frozen yoghurt will be the top performer in ice cream and frozen desserts during the forecast period in terms of its rate of retail current value sales growth – albeit from a fairly low base – just ahead of single portion dairy ice cream. Frozen yoghurt will benefit from having a somewhat healthier image than ice cream: In the wake of COVID-19, many local consumers are becoming more health conscious, with weight management in particular of growing importance.
Competition between traditional and modern grocery retailers will remain intense in ice cream and dairy desserts. Boutique ice cream retailers, such as Bouza Roll EG and Dara’s Ice Cream, are rolling out new outlets that offer upmarket ice cream treats.
