Like most other snacks categories, ice cream and frozen desserts returned to strong growth in 2019 following a heavy decline the previous year as a result of Nigeria’s struggling economy and strong unit price growth over 2015-2017. In 2019, the category benefited from rising disposable incomes thanks to the recovering economy as well as ongoing growth in the population of young people, with ice cream consumption being highest amongst children, teenagers and young adults.
Ice cream manufacturers in Nigeria are continually working to expand their distribution networks, maintaining a particular focus on modern grocery retailers. Although traditional grocery retailers continued to lead sales in 2019, the channel’s share declined by 11 percentage points over the course of the review period as consumers increasingly frequented supermarkets and hypermarkets, the number of which is increasing every year.
In 2019, sales of ice cream and frozen desserts continued to be dominated by frozen yoghurt. This can be partly attributed to the activities of Fan Ice, which mainly sells this type of product through mobile vendors.
Fan Milk continued to dominate ice cream and frozen desserts in Nigeria in 2019, largely thanks to its strength in frozen yoghurt. The company has a longstanding presence in the country, during which time it has built a strong distribution network, with mobile vendors selling its Fan Super Yogo frozen yoghurt brand.
Domestic producers and brands remained the most popular in ice cream and frozen desserts in 2019 thanks to their early-mover advantages, competitive prices and extensive distribution networks. While Fan Milk is a local subsidiary of the multinational Fan Milk International, second-ranked Provita Vitaforce Foods Nigeria markets the wholly local Golden Scoop brand, which continued to lead impulse ice cream.
Gaining strong visibility through modern grocery retailers, which is a growing channel for ice cream due to its rising popularity among many middle- and upper-income consumers, will be a key area of focus for manufacturers seeking to gain share in ice cream over the forecast period. To this end, establishing good relationships with the leading chains and ensuring a consistent supply of goods will be key, as will being able to offer a wide range of products in various pack sizes.
