Executive Summary

Aug 2019
PROSPECTS
Strong presence of domestic players coupled with hot weather driving growth

2018 was a hugely successful year for ice cream manufacturers. Besides the hot summer, the 2018 FIFA World Cup which was held in Russia stimulated impressive growth both in volume and value terms.

Impulse ice cream dominates but bulk packs benefit from rise in planned purchases

While impulse ice cream dominates value sales, take-home ice cream remained another important driver of growth in 2019. Consumption is gradually changing from traditional on-the-go impulse demand to more pre-planned behaviour and as a result take-home ice cream is steadily growing.

Lack of awareness limits development of frozen desserts but horeca offers glimpse of category’s potential

Frozen desserts remained a niche category in 2019 in both volume and value terms, with the category seeing only limited growth in actual terms. Low consumer awareness is the key reason for this with frozen desserts typically being placed separately from ordinary chilled desserts in retail stores, with Russians often unaware that they can find some desserts in the freezer department.
