Ice cream and frozen desserts is a promising category in the Netherlands. The category saw solid retail volume and current value growth rates before COVID-19, which continued uninterrupted in 2020, even seeing slightly higher rates of volume growth, with this trend expected to continue in 2021.
Warm weather is always a driver of sales of impulse ice cream. The very warm beginning to spring in 2021 is expected to help drive up value sales in the year overall, although volume sales are set to continue to fall due to home seclusion.
Unilever Nederland is expected to retain its dominance in ice cream and frozen desserts in 2021, thanks to owning the top three brands: Magnum, Ola and Hertog. Magnum is available in many different flavours and formats, such as sticks, mini-sticks, bulk packs and multi-packs.
Despite the continued return to growth of foodservice in the forecast period, retail sales of ice cream and frozen desserts are set to continue to rise in both retail volume and current value terms, although growth rates are expected to return to lower levels similar to those seen before the pandemic. Impulse and take-home ice cream are projected to see similar performances, as impulse ice cream recovers from the hit it took during the pandemic due to more time spent at home.
Responsible consumption is also reaching ice cream and frozen desserts. Good opportunities are therefore expected for vegan and dairy-free ice cream, as Dutch consumers are becoming more conscious of the consequences of their consumption on the environment and such products are known for significantly reducing an individual’s environmental footprint.
So-called Netflix options in ice cream demonstrate the potential for growth, with such products especially promoted for eating whilst sitting on the sofa watching television. The sitting-on-the couch culture is expected to remain in evidence for some time even after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, as new habits will have been formed.
