Having declined during 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions led to a significant reduction in consumer mobility, retail current value sales of in-car entertainment will grow at their fastest rate in nine years during 2021. Growth in demand for in-car speakers will be particularly strong.
Retail current value sales of in-car navigation will continue to decline during 2021, as a growing number of local consumers use smartphones for navigation. Many smartphone apps now provide directions and update the user on real-time traffic issues, in addition to searching for shops or restaurants.
Non-grocery specialists (particularly electronics and appliance specialist retailers) are the leading distribution channel for in-car entertainment, but they lost significant retail value share to e-commerce during 2020. This was largely due to COVID-19 restrictions, which led to the closure of all non-essential retail outlets for an extended period.
Retail current value sales of in-car entertainment will begin to fall again during 2022 and continue to decline for the remainder of the forecast period. The growing popularity of smartphones will be the main driver of this.
A growing number of new cars will come with in-car speakers and in-dash media players that many local consumers will deem sufficient for their needs. Some in-car entertainment will continue to be purchased by hobby consumers, but even this segment of consumers is shrinking with growing quality of pre-installed equipment.
In-car navigation will see the steepest decline in retail current value sales in in-car entertainment during the review period. Increasingly ubiquitous, smartphones will continue to eclipse in-car navigation, with demand for the latter likely to be limited to a relatively small number of consumers seeking high-end products, such as those offered by Garmin.
