In-car navigation continued to record steep retail volume declines in 2019. Following very strong growth rates during the pre-smartphone era, the category immediately suffered as smartphone navigation was introduced, as the latter provides the same quality as the majority of in-car navigation devices.
In-dash media players was the only category within in-car entertainment to record retail volume growth in 2019, albeit at a marginal level. These products now attract only hobby consumers, who wish to enhance their driving experience with higher-quality audio systems.
Pioneer Rus extended its overall lead in in-car entertainment in 2019, leading in-dash media players and in-car speakers, in which it is particularly strong. The company has a strong reputation and an extensive presence in the major retailers, giving it a strong advantage in in-car entertainment.
Although smartphone navigation is taking over the major role in in-car navigation, players with higher-end brands continued to gain share in 2019. Prology, Garmin and Prestigio remained the major brands, and all three gained share over the year.
In-car entertainment sales are shrinking and consequently interest in the category among the major electronics and appliance specialist retailers is diminishing. Therefore, the major brands, which are already established in the category, are set to remain the main references over the forecast period.
