With the growing popularity of virtual stores, more and more people are turning to the internet to purchase the goods required for their daily use. Online shoppers in New Zealand spent more than ever in 2018, and strong growth is expected to continue in the forecast period to 2023.
Whilst New Zealanders increasingly prefer to shop online, factors such as secure payment and product quality remain top-of-mind. Although most internet retailers are trying to make the online shopping experience as customer-friendly as possible, there is heightened awareness surrounding data privacy, and consumers are expecting online retailers to actively protect their data.
Previously, goods worth less than NZD400 bought from overseas sellers and imported to New Zealand were GST-exempt. As a result, retailers in New Zealand were seemingly less competitive, because they were required to comply with the law and pay GST on sales in New Zealand, whilst foreign websites in direct competition with the New Zealand firms were not.
Australia’s Catch Group took its first major step across the Tasman Sea by venturing into online shopping in New Zealand as part of a bid to substantially increase its reach. Its website, Catchoftheday.
Australian online retailer Kogan expanded into New Zealand in 2014, and continues to shake up online consumer electronics and appliances by offering customers in the country localised access to a proportion of the company’s portfolio of brands spanning technology and homewares, as well as its own private label consumer electronics range. The company’s wide product range and low prices are popular with New Zealanders, and the launch of Kogan Mobile in June 2018 is expected to deliver more choices to mobile customers in the market, cementing its position as one of the preferred online retailers by delivering on its promise as a reasonably-priced online retailer in the country.
Woolworths (New Zealand) led internet retailing with its Countdown Online brand in 2018, followed by The Warehouse Group, Amazon.com and Apple Store New Zealand.
