Large city hotels, such as those in the capital with a strong vocation for business trips, have been facing greater challenges in occupancy than hotels in more rural and coastal settings. Although occupancy rates have dropped for the entire industry, hotel rates in the capital have been particularly affected, especially those hotels that were targeted by businessmen and people on business trips.
Although these trends came before the event of COVID-19, contactless and hybrid technologies have strengthened during the pandemic. Apps, in particular, are increasingly important in the way hoteliers manage the services they provide to their customers, and can now also manage many aspects of the guest cycle and experience.
Today’s travellers has a myriad of options for accommodation; in addition to traditional hotels, they can choose between holiday rentals, hostels, serviced apartments, treehouses, and even underwater hotels. As people travel more frequently and for longer durations, and as platforms such as Airbnb allow any accommodation provider to reach a large audience online, the characteristics of lodging are changing.
During the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, hotel rooms have also been repositioned to cater to patients in need of beds when the hospitals were overrun. For example, during the third wave of contagion in spring 2021, the Mayor of Barranguilla, Jaime Pumarejo Heins, announced that beds within a hotel in the city had been prepared as a “hospital”, which would be available for the care of patients who needed low and medium complexities of treatments.
