The lack of international travellers will continue to moderate the recovery of lodging sales in 2021. When another wave of infections hit Denmark, the country went under a strict lockdown which carried over into the beginning of 2021.
Unlike hotels, other lodging types, such as camping sites and holiday homes, were not hit as hard by the pandemic, with the same trend set to continue in 2021. Other lodging options will perform well in 2021, especially considering the expected uplift in domestic travellers who will be taking breaks and holidays within the country.
Due to restrictions on international travel constraining demand in 2021, lodging is set to see a more robust recovery with stronger current value growth in 2022. Subsequently, growth is set to gradually slow over the remainder of the forecast period as demand normalizes.
Hotels and other lodging accommodations in Copenhagen are expected to have a more difficult path to recovery than lodging in rural areas and smaller cities. The main reason for this is that the capital is heavily dependent on tourists from more distant locations, such as the US, which accounted for the most visitors to Copenhagen in 2019 according to data from Statistics Denmark.
