Hotels in Egypt were declared the hardest hit in the MENA region with occupancy plummeting in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many hotels have been forced to close down or have had to make employee redundancies in order to survive, whilst others have been forced to turn to other means of survival.
The government announced that 85% of Egypt’s hotels have gained the license to operate under the current health restrictions, having officially passed an inspection from the Ministry of Health. These licenses are being offered to hotels that have applied for one and which have followed all of its precautionary regulations.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the hosting of physical events, fairs and activities in Egypt with many of these interactions either being cancelled or shifting online during 2020 and 2021. For those events that are taking place there has been the introduction of stringent safety precautions including limiting the number of attendees.
Alongside the government’s efforts to attract more tourists, which have included waiving visa fees for visitors to touristic areas in Egypt, it also continues to forge ahead with the expansion plans for its travel and tourism industry. In line with this, the number of available hotel rooms is set to increase significantly over the forecast period.
