Conversely to airlines or intermediaries, lodging was not among the hardest hit by COVID-19. Nonetheless, lodging lost more than half of its value sales in 2020, and will be unlikely to fully recover in 2021 due to a turbulent first quarter.
While almost all hotels were subject to the negative effects of the pandemic to some extent, it seems that independent hotels may have a better outlook for 2021 than chains. Other than those located in ski resorts, independent hotels located in the western coastline of France enjoyed record attendance in the summer of 2020.
Trade associations are pessimistic about the recovery outlook for hotels in France, notably expecting a big wave of bankruptcies following the pandemic. However, the number of bankruptcies in the middle of 2021 was still limited.
For hotel players, the main threat over the forecast period will come from the renewed offensive of Airbnb, Booking.com and Google, who have all been focusing on non-chained hotels, which are those who suffered less during the pandemic.
