Demand for affordable lodging options is growing in India as a result of the rise in domestic travel and the country’s appeal for budget travellers from abroad. Consequently, unrated hotels saw strong growth during the review period driven by their low pricing compared to luxury, mid-market and even budget hotels.
Lodging online, particularly through intermediaries, grew strongly in 2019. Price discounts, a growing range of mobile apps, a wide selection of hotels and an increasing portfolio of other accommodation options, such as homestays and guest houses, are driving the expansion of online lodging bookings through OTA sites.
Luxury hotels are expected to continue to invest in capacity, which is set to provide a boost to the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) segment in the context of India’s growing significance as a business destination. Affluent inbound leisure travellers will also be an important consumer group in the growth of the luxury and upscale hotels segment.
