Having plunged by close to two thirds during 2020 as a result of restrictions on movement (both domestic and international) and the economic shock of the pandemic – with operators compelled to either shut down or operate under strict conditions between late March and June 2020 – lodging retail current value sales will rebound during 2021, as these restrictions are eased and the economic environment begins to stabilise. However, retail current value sales will remain well below their 2019 level.
With restrictions on international movement making it very difficult for South Africans to travel abroad, staycations remained the only practical travel choice for many during 2021. Moreover, amid a sharp decline in international arrivals, accommodation businesses increasingly targeting domestic travellers.
The rate of growth in lodging retail current value sales will accelerate during 2022, raising them above their 2019 peak. Growth will moderate over the remainder of the forecast period.
Campsites and other lodging are likely to reposition their products as environmentally friendly, targeting travellers who are seeking more of a connection with nature and history. A notable example of this is Kruger Shalati – a train dating from the 1950s that has been converted into 24 luxury hotel rooms and is located on the Kruger National Park Bridge, providing guests with an unmatched view of the park.
