As the pandemic continues to affect countries worldwide in 2021, including a third wave of COVID-19 infections in Switzerland in the second quarter of the year, international travel and, therefore, inbound tourism remain significantly below pre-pandemic levels. The severity of the impact on Swiss lodging players depends to a large degree on their location within the country as the guest structure varies considerably by region.
Swiss lodging players suffered considerable sales losses in 2020 and have only limited potential for growth in 2021 as the pandemic continues to affect travel activities. Hotels located in Zurich, Geneva and Basel are particularly affected by the lack of inbound tourism as domestic tourists either prefer only short trips to the metropolitan areas or prefer visiting the mountainous regions away from major cities.
While inbound tourism dropped considerably in 2020 and will only gradually recover in 2021 and beyond, lodging registered record demand from domestic tourists in the summer months of 2020, though this demand was not spread evenly across regions. Hotels particularly affected by the pandemic are aiming to attract a higher number of domestic tourists to at least partially offset the losses from the lack of inbound tourism.
The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a digitalisation push in Switzerland, with Swiss hotels aiming to accelerate the uptake and integration of digital technologies in order to benefit their recovery. Lodging players have invested in their digital infrastructures and processes to enhance their marketing efforts via social media and to connect their own booking platforms with metasearch engines such as Google Hotel Ads and TripAdvisor.
