Lodging in Taiwan has been severely impacted by the pandemic and the measures taken to contain its spread since its emergence at the beginning of 2020, with hotels in particular affected by a lack of travel and tourism. Players looking to survive the pandemic significantly reduced the number of available rooms and reduced staffing to minimal levels or even used the time to completely suspend business temporarily and carry out renovations on their properties instead.
Despite ongoing reluctance amongst domestic tourists to spend on lodging, sales per outlet for hotels is predicted to increase over 2021, driven by an upturn in inbound receipts on lodging and in line with a rise in inbound arrivals and the protocol for a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a designated facility including hotels. Figures however, will remain significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels with a ban on foreign nationals entering the country during the strictest of measures.
With travel and tourism players likely to continue to focus their efforts on driving domestic demand towards the end of 2021 and into the early part of the forecast period, Taiwanese consumers will start to extend their holidays to travel further distances that allow them to enjoy nature in resorts in remote areas or the countryside. Resort hotels are therefore, starting to ramp up their offer of experiences in terms of activities and services in an attempt to evoke a feeling of an overseas trip to include various indulgences due to pent-up demand.
Tourism targeting foreign visitors has severely declined during the pandemic, with hotels in particular shifting their focus towards domestic tourists. Hotel brands have seen particularly high purchases through online travel exhibitions because consumers remain relatively cautious about overseas travel and therefore are likely to continue to spend on domestic travel more than abroad over the early part of the forecast period.
