Luxury cars recorded a strong increase in volume sales in 2017 and, although slower in 2018, also recorded double-digit growth. Changes in luxury vehicle taxes during 2016-2018 played a key role in category growth.
In addition to the elimination of taxes for luxury vehicles, another extremely important factor was the elimination of import barriers. In 2017 and 2018, luxury cars displayed a good performance in unit terms but also in models with high-level equipment.
Despite the strong recovery of luxury cars towards the end of the review period, volume sales in 2018 remained far lower than the peak reached in 2013. In that year, the price of a vehicle produced in the country and a luxury car imported were very similar because of the inflation rates, which sharply increased local production costs, while the exchange rate lag benefited imported vehicles.
From 2016 onwards, the elimination of taxes for most luxury cars played a key role in the normalisation and recovery of the category. However, there is still one tax that could impact negatively on imports and sales in the short term.
Many luxury car companies announced a possible return to Argentina but only a limited number started operations. Undoubtedly one of the most important return was Lotus with the opening of an office and a sales agency in the north zone of Great Buenos Aires at the beginning of 2018.
German brands dominate luxury cars in Argentina with BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The range of models and versions with attractive prices explain this dominance.
