The pandemic has hit sales of luxury eyewear in Romania in a variety of different ways. Most important has been the closure of all non-essential stores between March and May at the beginning of the pandemic.
Sales of luxury sunglasses have also been affected by domestic and international travel restrictions, which prevented many affluent Romanians from taking summer holidays. However, this has been offset to a certain extent by the fact that many Romanians buy sunglasses either from duty-free or when travelling in countries where this a broader choice or prices are cheaper.
Sales of luxury sunglasses are highly seasonal, unsurprisingly selling most strongly in the run up to summer. The lockdown between March and May has had a marked effect on this, as many producers and retailers chose to postpone the launch of new sunglasses collections, which usually take place in March and April.
Assuming that retail conditions return to some kind of normality in 2021, sales of luxury eyewear are going to recover over the forecast period, although unit sales will not reach pre-pandemic levels by 2025. A key reason for this is the economic impact of the pandemic on the aspirational middle-class consumers that drove sales development over the review period.
Sales of luxury eyewear via e-commerce are set to more than double in 2020, as a direct result of the pandemic, and this trend is likely to accelerate over the forecast period. Producers and retailers that develop effective online strategies, and are able to back up sales portals with strong service offers will be solidly positioned to take advantage of this.
In the long term, sales of luxury eyewear are set to see solid growth over the forecast period. Despite the delay to the return of pre-pandemic volumes and values before the end of the forecast period, consumer preferences in Romania remain unchanged.
