Turkey's important tourism industry is being negatively affected by the fallout from growing domestic instability. Terrorist attacks, an attempted coup and eroding democracy have contributed to a decline in tourists to this once-popular destination.
As there were fewer foreign tourists visiting Turkey over the review period, luxury hotels started to look for ways to revive business beyond offering service as a hotel. In August 2017, the Fairmont Quasar started to organise Movie Nights called “Turkish Movies, Turkish Flavours” to attract local visitors.
Arabic tourists continued to visit Turkey during a time when the foreign offices of EU countries warned international travellers that the security environment “remains potentially volatile” after increased terrorist attracts. Fairmont Quasar Istanbul, which opened its doors in January 2017, with special promotions ideal for the Middle East traveller, including Ramadan special rates and increased family offerings, is expected to attract Arabic tourists over the forecast period.
There were previously planned hotel openings in 2016/2017 in Turkey despite domestic instability. The investment plans were already agreed, while Turkey's tourism was booming earlier in the review period.
In March 2017, Accor Hotels announced its effort to grow within the upscale and luxury market by considering entering into a long-term joint venture with Turkey-based Rixos Hotels. Accor Hotels completed acquisition of the Fairmont, Raffles, and Swissôtel brands based on the company’s decision to establish a luxury brands collection in 2016 and building its reputation as a major luxury player.
Consumers are beginning to book shorter periods due to busy lifestyles but want to enjoy their stays more intensively and pamper themselves with experiential luxury packages. As a consequence, luxury hotels are beginning to offer improved and more creative side services to their clients.
