Luxury hotels were hugely affected by COVID-19, with value sales falling by a half. The hotels were forced to close for six weeks during the strict lockdown and when they did open up again, occupancy rates were well below average and a lot of facilities were restricted, such as spas.
Orbis (AccorHotels Group) retained its leadership of luxury hotels in 2019 through its Sofitel brand. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc (Bristol Luxury Collection, Sheraton Grand) followed closely behind, with the other main player being the InterContinental Hotels Group.
While Warsaw attracts major brands of hotels, with the latest addition being the opening of the long-awaited Nobu Hotel Warsaw in August, smaller cities such as Kraków and Gdansk are also expected to see further openings of luxury hotels. 2019 witnessed two new openings by AccorHotels Group through Orbis with The Bridge MGallery by Sofitel in Wroclaw, offering 184 rooms, a ballroom and an observation deck, while in March of the same year, the five-star Bachleda Luxury Hotel in Kraków, also under Sofitel, opened its doors.
