Luxury leather goods took a huge hit in 2020, with value sales declining by nearly a third, as people were confined to home and retail outlets were closed for parts of the year. In 2021, as society gradually opens up, leather goods is expected to register a recovery, though value sales are still expected to significantly lower than before the pandemic, as with for instance large numbers of people still working from home, there is not the same demand for designer handbags.
Luxury leather goods continues to be a fragmented competitive landscape led by prestigious global brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Kering SA remains the leading player, offering a range of luxury leather goods including Gucci, Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta.
Travel goods registered the large slump in current value sales in 2020. With Polish borders opening up to travel once again in 2021, luxury travel goods is expected to register the highest current value growth, as Polish consumers travel abroad once again.
It is hoped that the pandemic will not have a long-term effect on the economy and if the economic recovery is speedy, luxury leather goods will register very healthy constant value growth over the forecast period. Once travel opens up fully, including business travel, and also remote workers return to the office in force, then luxury leather goods will register healthy value growth.
Women's luxury bags and small leather goods is the by far largest product area, accounting for most of value sales. Polish women prefer bags in different colours, styles, sizes and textures to suit various dress styles and occasions.
While online channels experienced a huge increase in value sales in 2020, due to the lockdowns, this growth will not be maintained over the forecast period. Consumers prefer to purchase luxury leather goods in brick-and-mortar outlets and enjoy the experience of touching the leather goods in a luxurious, boutique setting.
