Value sales fell by a quarter in 2020, as consumers had less interest in purchasing luxury writing instrument and stationery during lockdowns. Such items are also often given as a gift and there were less gifts shared, due to people socialising less.
Montblanc retained its convincing leadership of luxury writing instruments in 2020, with its namesake brand. However, along with other leading brands such as Pelikan, Visconti and Montegrappa, it is under pressure from intensifying competition in the form of smaller players under “others” which collectively account for the largest value share.
While e-commerce registered significant value growth in 2020, growth is expected to be lower in 2021. Most consumers of luxury writing instruments and stationery are older consumers and they prefer to shop in physical channels.
Luxury writing instruments and stationery will register muted constant value growth over the forecast period. The demand for standard and luxury writing instruments faces increasing pressure from portable consumer electronics.
Limited editions of fountain pens increase their uniqueness and value and several brands release new hand-made special editions dedicated to historical events, important global icons, or reproduce fountain pens used by famous figures from the world of politics such as the Montblanc JF Kennedy and Montblanc Mahatma Gandhi. The price of these limited-edition luxury fountain pens is generally higher and is one way that players could spark consumer interest over the forecast period.
Although several brands such as Montblanc have their own concept stores in Poland, most brands of luxury writing instruments are offered through third party retailers, which also sell other luxury goods. This is because value sales are too small for most brands to justify a chain of branded stores.
