Retail volume sales of meat, particularly the largest volume categories of pork and poultry, were given a boost in 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown when consumers largely remained at home, along with the widespread closure of foodservice outlets and social institutions, leading to significant declines for the latter channels. Russian consumers typically become more cautious and price-sensitive in terms of their purchasing behaviour.
A common negative factor for the development of most fresh meat in 2021 was the increase in unit prices. The average price of meat in 2020 declined, driven by the most popular types of pork and poultry, which demonstrated single-digit drops.
Total volume sales of meat in Russia are expected to post positive dynamics over the forecast period due to the recovery of local consumers’ purchasing power, while improving tourism opportunities are expected to positively impact struggling categories such as beef and veal, and lamb, mutton and goat to some extent. Along with general improving demand, the niche of other meat is also expected to fully recover.
Turkey and lamb offer strong growth potential in Russia due to ongoing investment and production development. The creation of new sheep feedlots in Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia, in the Stavropol Territory and the allocation of state support for sheep farming in the Kurgan region indicate the transition of the industry from seasonal feeding to year-round industrial production based on different breeds.
