Mixed retailers registered a rebound after outlet closures during the 2020 lockdowns. While variety stores operating at normal capacity, current values sales increased in both department stores and variety.
Using the first-mover advantage, Offertissima took the variety stores landscape by storm. However, it was not the only significant player for long: the successful homeshopping company Studio Moderna – TV Prodaja doo decided to extend its homeshopping brand Top Shop into bricks-and-mortar retail as well.
There are 103 variety stores in Croatia and Nama is the main department store, but there are no mass merchandisers or warehouse clubs. One reason for the absence of such retailers is that Croatia has a small and declining population and also retail spend per capita is low.
After being negatively impacted due to the pandemic, department stores is expected to continue witnessing declining current value sales over the duration of the forecast period. However, this will be a more long-term problem, rather than the fallout of the pandemic.
Variety stores will fare better than department stores over the forecast period. Rising price sensitivity due to the fallout of the pandemic and inflationary pressures, as global energy prices feed into retail price rises, means that consumers will be look out lower-priced alternatives for basic household goods.
Mass merchandisers and warehouse clubs thrive on big numbers, swapping low mark-ups for greater footfall. Although the region around the capital Zagreb could support a few of these stores in terms of population density, retailing capacity in Zagreb is already saturated and there are no signs that either of these formats will be entering the market in the near future.
