Mixed retailers grew 4% in current value terms in 2016. Consumer confidence returned to Ireland with disposable income levels increasing and more money to spend on retail products. Demand for value remained with strong growth for value-based retailers such as Tiger Retail Irelands’ Tiger and Poundland’s Dealz as consumers still sought bargains. However, department stores, particularly those at the higher end also received a boost in sales as consumers could afford to spend on luxury retail products such as apparel and footwear.
Dunnes Stores Ltd was the leading player with a value share of 52% in 2016. The company’s sales continued to grow as Dunnes Stores grocery sales increased with extra footfall in store with the shop and save voucher system that proved to be successful. Dunnes Stores also developed an upmarket strategy with two of its Dublin stores being developed to feel like a food market rather than just a grocery store. The company also placed a well-known cheesemonger called Sheridan’s in-store. Its other departments also chase upmarket shoppers with brand collaborations with Irish designers such as Joanne Hynes and Paul Costello.
Mixed retailers is expected to see a value CAGR of 3% in constant 2016 terms over the forecast period, slower than the review period. However, the review period included the repositioning of several Dunnes Stores to department stores which increased growth at that time. Sales growth will also be weaker as several retailers focus their attentions on online strategies as opposed to increasing physical outlet numbers.
