E-commerce was extremely beneficial for retailers during the pandemic in 2020, as non-essential stores closed and even essential outlets witnessed limitations on capacity, and social distancing regulations and long queues for consumers. 2021 witnessed a deepening of these trends, because while many restrictions were lifted, in-store limitations in terms of capacity and try-ons continued to be a reality that consumers had to contend with when shopping in stores.
While most e-commerce operations are optimised for mobile retailing, the clear winners in the Chilean arena are Falabella and MercadoLibre. These players have launched their own apps and increasingly direct consumers to their use; further pushing the convenience factor during the pandemic.
Even before the onset of COVID-19, last mile players had already been steadily capitalising on opportunities to triumph in the mobile e-commerce arena. The best experience is offered by their apps, and as such, most consumers will turn to their mobile devices when needing to purchase from stores that offer this option.
Value growth (at constant 2021 prices) for mobile e-commerce is expected to slow over the forecast period, following the dynamic performance of the review period, especially in 2020. However, this reflects the fast development and established presence of mobile e-commerce in the retailing landscape in Chile, rather than a diminishing of the channel’s appeal.
Many retailers invested in modernising mobile responsiveness and functionality in 2020 and 2021, but substantial work is still needed before the infrastructure and performance of mobile e-commerce can be considered optimal. Therefore, further investments in mobile responsiveness and functionality are expected to be made by retailers over the forecast period, as well as stronger marketing and deals to push the benefits of using mobile devices for shopping purposes.
