While current value growth for mobile e-commerce was lower than in 2020, when payments more than doubled, growth was still very healthy in 2021. Value sales through mobile are still significantly lower than overall e-commerce, though growing faster, and are particularly popular with the younger generation.
Mobile e-commerce had a negligible presence in Uzbekistan at the beginning of the review period, but value sales have increased and it is the fastest growing channel in retailing overall. Mobile e-commerce will benefit from broader efforts to improve the speed and efficiency of internet connections.
While conditions for the development of mobile e-commerce are improving, there are very little mobile apps available, particularly from local companies and most that do exist are basic, with limited functionality. Major players such as AliExpress encourage users to engage in mobile e-commerce by offering coupons when they download the platform’s mobile app, for example, and international retailers dominate mobile e-commerce in Uzbekistan.
Mobile e-commerce will be the fastest growing retailing channel over the forecast period. The growth will be driven by younger consumers, who are more comfortable making mobile payments, having grown up with this technology.
There has been significant improvement in terms of mobile coverage over the review period, as well as more affordable smartphone data packages. Also, while smartphone penetration is growing fast, a lot of the smartphones are Chinese devices with lower functionality in terms of storage etc.
Card usage is growing in Uzbekistan, including online card payments, but mobile payments using virtual wallets is still at a very low level. Players could learn from neighbouring countries and their experience with developing mobile payments.
