The Russian economy continued to stabilise in 2019, while consumer credit performed well. This was a key factor in the strong growth of smartphones.

Improving functionality drives high value growth for smartphones, while credit may limit growth going forward

Smartphones remained the driving force in mobile phones in 2019 and this trend is anticipated to continue over the forecast period. Demand for higher quality, wider screens and greater functionality led to significant price increases, boosting value growth to outperform volume growth over the year.

Feature phones set to return to declines as smartphones offer much more functionality

After the unexpected growth of feature phones in 2018 due to pent up demand after the economic difficulties, mainly among elderly demographics, the category returned to its declining path in 2019 and is likely to register steep declines going forward as smartphones continue to be favoured due to their breadth of applications and ability to connect to the digital environment.

Samsung Electronics Rus fends off the competition to extend its lead in mobile phones

Samsung Electronics Rus extended its lead in mobile phones in 2019, despite strong competition from Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Huawei over the review period. Samsung did lose some share to these players over the early part of the review period, but managed to recover some share in 2019.

The Apple iPhone demonstrates resilience

Although competition from Chinese brands increased in 2019, iPhone maintained its strong position and second place, despite losing marginal share. The brand benefits from its strong reputation and user eco-system, which helps maintain strong sales of iPhone.

Domestic brands target the low-price smartphone segment

Digma, bq and Dexp are domestic brands, covering some of the demand for inexpensive smartphones in Russia. These are usually assembled in Asian countries but labelled as Russian before being sold to retail outlets.
