Modern grocery retailers performed strongly in 2021 and continued to steal value share from traditional grocery retailers. In particular, forecourt retailers performed strongly and registered the highest current value growth, recovering from the dismal trading year in 2020, as people travelled in their cars much less, due to lockdowns.
While forecourt retailers registered the highest current value growth in 2021, this was largely due to forecourt retailers recovering the value sales they lost during the 2020 lockdown. However, discounters have been the strongest performing channels in recent times and a part of this strong perform is due to expansion in less populated rural areas, consumers generally have lower incomes and greatly appreciate the affordability of discounters.
Poslovni Sistem Mercator continued to lead the competitive landscape in 2021 and was the leading players in hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores. However, it lost value share in 2021, as did second placed Internationale Spar Centrale.
Modern grocery retails will register moderate constant value and volume growth over the forecast period. The recovery of the economy post COVID-19 will support value and volume sales.
Discounters will be the strongest performers in terms of value share growth. Consumers are expected to be price sensitive, due to rising inflation and, will prioritise affordability.
Hypermarkets are expected to be the worst performing modern grocery channel over the forecast period. The decline of hypermarkets is due to changing consumer behaviour.
