Accounting for the lion’s share of total grocery retailers current value sales, modern grocery retailers continued to perform well in Slovenia in 2017 as favourable economic conditions supported high consumer confidence and rising disposable incomes. Sustained investment in store refurbishment and new outlet openings over the review period also helped to sustain the positive development of modern channels in 2017, and should continue to do towards 2022.
Responding to consumer demands for improved shopping experiences, leading modern grocery retailers chains continued to invest in modernising their outlets and expanding their product assortments in 2017. One notable trend in this regard was the further expansion of private label lines across multiple product categories.
Thanks to enduring price-sensitivity and growing acceptance of private label among consumers, discounters is expected to perform slightly better than the remaining modern grocery retailers channels over the forecast period in terms of value sales growth at constant 2017 prices. The channel is also expected to see outlet numbers grow steadily, albeit at a slower pace than during the review period due to increasing saturation.
Poslovni Sistem Mercator remained the clear leader in modern grocery retailers in value terms in 2017, followed by Internationale Spar Centrale BV. Mercator’s leadership was built on its early mover advantage and historical strategy of rapidly expanding its outlet network under the marketing slogans “A Mercator for every village” and “The best neighbour”.
Hofer doo, Slovenia’s top discounters operator, overtook Engrotuš dd in 2016 to become the third leading player in modern grocery retailers in value terms. Hofer gained ground throughout the review period thanks to successful management of its brand and its private label portfolio at a time when falling purchasing power led many consumers to actively seek out cheaper products and discount promotions.
E.Leclerc Drive, the online store and distribution centre managed by Rudnidis doo, ceased operating in 2017.
