Similar to other disposable hygiene products, after seeing solid increases during most of the review period, in 2020 nappies/diapers/pants saw a slowdown in growth, with static retail volume sales and a much slower current value increase than in previous years. This was mainly on the back of depressed incomes due to the economic fallout of COVID-19, which hampered the switch to disposable products from cloth products.
Brand activities in early 2020, prior to the full force of the pandemic, did include the release of new products. These included Pequeñín Extraprotección from Familia Sancela del Pacífico, which claims new technology to improve absorbency.
The Huggies brand from international player Kimberly-Clark maintained its lead in nappies/diapers/pants in value terms in 2020. Kimberly-Clark is a well-known and well-established player in the Dominican Republic, and continued to benefit from its extensive distribution network, that efficiently supplies both modern and traditional retail outlets throughout the country.
Nappies/diapers/pants is expected to see a return to growth in retail volume terms and see a higher increase in current value terms in 2021. However, growth will be hampered by the continued presence of COVID-19 in the first half of the year, which will lead consumers to remain cautious with their spending.
After many years of seeing the strongest growth in nappies/diapers/pants, junior nappies/diapers is expected to relinquish this honour in the forecast period, although it will remain by far the largest category. New born nappies and disposable pants are set to see the strongest retail volume CAGRs.
Even after recovery, retail volume growth rates will remain slower than those seen in the review period, as the population aged 0-3 is set to continue to decline, which will hamper the opportunities for growth. Nevertheless, sales increases are still expected, as for this age group the country still has per capita consumption of nappies/diapers about half of that in developed regions, which leaves room for organic growth and category expansion.
