Both retail volume and current value sales of nappies/diapers pants declined for another year in 2021, with sales falling in all categories. It was reported in 2021 by the Korean National Statistical Office that the number of births in 2020 was 272,400 – a decrease of 30,300 from the previous year.
Although domestic sales of nappies/diapers/pants have been shrinking due to the decline in the fertility rate, the trend amongst parents of preferring premium products is becoming clear, centred on single-child families, and the related product segment is expanding. Therefore, players have been following this trend, with the launch of several new lines by existing companies in the category – high-end nappies/diapers that are up to twice the price of regular products.
E-Mart is expanding its sourcing of overseas brand rights to attract overseas direct buyers. Overseas direct purchases, which are products purchased directly from the official websites of overseas brands and receiving delivery through a delivery agent, reached an amount of KRW1.
The birth rate is expected to continue to fall in South Korea, thus impacting demand for nappies/diapers/pants. The South Korean government has claimed that the low birth rate may even threaten national security and economic growth in the country, negatively impacting education, economic consumption, enrolment in national military service and even senior welfare.
In response to falling demand, the leading brands are likely to invest in the production of safer and more environmentally-friendly products to attract consumers, with biodegradable products and organic, sustainable materials expected to see greater importance over the forecast period. Prior to the pandemic, many consumers were investing in reusable nappies/diapers to be sustainable, but the obsession with hygiene and demand for disposable products overrode ethical and conscious consumption.
E-Mart announced in May 2021 that it would introduce a nappy/diaper voucher service, with a limited quantity of 10,000. The vouchers are for all Huggies nappies sold by E-Mart.
