Executive Summary

Oct 2017
PROSPECTS
Sales growth slows due to a falling number of smokers

Over the review period smokers in Croatia faced rising tobacco prices and bans on smoking in public places, thus making the habit both difficult and costly to maintain. Thanks also to public health campaigns discouraging smoking, this led to an increase in the number of smokers looking to kick the habit.

New legislation serves as a further attack on the tobacco industry

Croatia had long postponed the ratification of EU directive 2014/40 on tobacco use, with this risking punishment from the European Commission. However, in mid-2017, the new law was passed, introducing graphic health warnings to cover two thirds of cigarette packs, along with a written warning.

No threat from prescription medicines

Unlike some other OTC categories, NRT smoking cessation aids face no competition from prescription medicines. Although Champix from Pfizer has been licensed in Croatia via the centralised procedure of the EMA (European Medicines Agency), it is not available, thus leaving space for the Nicorette and Niquitin brands.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Competitive landscape remains stable

The competitive landscape in NRT smoking cessation aids remained stable in 2017, with very little change having been witnessed for many years. There are only two companies present, Pfizer Croatia, which sells Johnson & Johnson’s Nicorette brand, and GlaxoSmithKline, which sells Niquitin CQ, owned by Perrigo.

Nicorette the leading brand

Thanks to the first mover advantage, Nicorette enjoys a comfortable lead, commanding nearly two thirds of value sales, with Niquitin accounting for the remainder. Nicorette’s share has been slowly falling, mostly due to Niquitin being focused on NRT gum, which is growing in popularity.
