Due to the climate in Russia, only 5% of the nuts sold in the country are produced domestically, and 95% are imported. Imports of nuts from a number of countries were banned due to sanctions in the second half of 2014, and therefore volume sales of nuts dropped sharply, along with seeing substantial price growth.
In 2018, walnuts saw the fastest growth within nuts in total volume terms. Such rapid growth allowed this category to reach its pre-crisis volume sales in 2018, and volume growth is expected to slow in the forecast period.
Due to the climatic conditions in Russia, pine nuts, walnuts and hazelnuts are the only types of nuts which can be grown domestically. Pine nuts are gathered in forests, mainly in Siberia and the far east, and are not cultivated commercially.
