Following a strong performance pre-pandemic, demand for nuts witnessed declines in 2020, as Russians focused on essential spending in terms of groceries; nuts is a relatively high-priced fresh food item in Russia, and therefore not considered to be a staple product. However, the category rebounded strongly in 2021, with retail volume sales surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
Nuts in Russia are highly dependent on imports, which is another factor in fluctuating, and often rising, prices. The climatic conditions for the development of the resource base in Russia are limited.
Nuts is expected to record a stable performance over the forecast period with confident positive total volume growth. However, the dynamics of the category are highly dependent on the economic situation.
Semushka OOO, one of the largest producers of nuts and dried fruits, has developed its own retail chain called “Back to Nature”, opening two stores in Moscow. Its assortment includes more than 100 SKUs - almost all types of nuts and dried fruits are offered from around the world, including lines of nuts with various degrees of processing, and therefore capturing a wider audience with different requirements, including roasted, and with sea salt.
