The relative stabilisation of the economy and a more stable environment with respect to consumer confidence translated to mildly positive performance of domestic and outbound tourism. In this context, online travel sales to country residents saw current retail value growth of 7% in 2017, and outperformed offline value sales. Various factors contributed to growth; one is the constantly increasing penetration of broadband connectivity, spearheaded by mobile connectivity, and the increasing familiarisation with, and acceptance of, online services by Greek consumers, who traditionally did not trust online transactions.
Over the forecast period, online travel sales to residents are expected to increase further, and register a 4% CAGR at constant 2017 prices. Increasing internet, and especially mobile connectivity, along with familiarity with online booking and its benefits will be key growth drivers. High traffic for airlines such as Ryanair and Aegean Airlines, which offer online direct bookings will keep translating to increased online sales in airlines direct online sales to residents (with a mild 2% CAGR as the category is mature). Other transport, which consists mainly of ferries and, to a lesser extent rail, both of which enjoyed much less familiarisation with online bookings compared to airlines, will see the fastest growth, with an 18% CAGR at constant 2017 prices. In the same vein, lodging online sales will see the second fastest growth, with a 10% CAGR.
