Online travel sales to residents are benefiting from consumers' easy access to high-speed broadband and a high household penetration for smartphones. An estimated 93% of the population used the internet in 2017, while almost 75% will access the internet via mobile phones. In addition, many urban consumers are spending their lengthy daily commutes browsing online to pass the time. Many consumers are thus increasingly researching and booking travel online, with sales also benefiting from rapid expansion for online travel agencies. Traditional travel agencies and leading direct travel players are also increasingly investing in easy online booking, including smartphone apps. Online travel sales to residents will thus see a strong 7% current value growth in 2017 over the previous year, further gaining two percentage points in value share from offline sales and rising to almost 48% share.
The dynamic growth seen for online travel sales to residents during the review period is unlikely to continue into the forecast period, with this area continuing to face constraints. Growth is expected to slow from 9% value CAGR at constant 2017 prices in the review period to just 3% CAGR in the forecast period, with this only slightly higher than the 2% CAGR expected for travel as a whole. Growth will be hindered by an ageing population, with older consumers remaining more reluctant to buy online. Population ageing will thus hinder growth, as will the fact that older consumers tend to have greater spending power and more free time. Many consumers of all age groups will furthermore remain concerned about online security, however, and will prefer to browse online before buying offline.
