Organic continues to offer potential

Organic is a major trend in Germany, with organic produce becoming increasingly mainstream. Consumers continue to demand high quality and organic products are known to have undergone strict quality controls.

Growth of organic products proving a problem for some organic shops

Organic beverages posted strong growth over the review period, with this set to continue over the forecast period thanks to increased consumer awareness about these products. While the growth of organic products has attracted interest from beverage manufacturers, it has also posed problems for many organic shops as with beverage players achieving product listing in regular supermarkets such as Edeka, many organic shops are unable to compete due to their higher unit prices for the same product.

Manufacturers not only focusing on organic

While organic labels are increasingly in demand, this is often not enough for consumers, and so many manufacturers are trying to combine organic with naturalness in order to cater for current demands. This is the case, for example, with the organic RTD tea Mono Tee, which is made from brewed tea, is unsweetened and is positioned as a flavoured alternative to bottled water.

Coca-Cola continues to lead organic beverages

Coca-Cola continued to lead organic beverages in 2018 thanks to its popular organic non-cola carbonate Vio Bio Limo. It was closely followed by the organic supermarket Alnatura Produktions- & Handels with its private label, which is mainly present in hot drinks.

Smaller companies invest more in organic beverages

Many smaller domestic and international beverage producers are increasingly focusing on certified organic beverages as more consumers become conscious about the origin and content of products. This is the case, for example, with the German coconut water maker Mark & Monkey’s, which is working on achieving organic certification in order to be listed in certain retailers, such as the drugstore Dm.
