Organic beverages continues to account for the smallest share of retail sales in health and wellness beverages in South Korea owing to the limited available product range and price barriers preventing organic beverages from gaining in popularity. Organic green tea accounts for the majority of organic beverage sales, after trending upwards constantly in retail sales over the review period.

Growing demand for organic fruit/vegetable juice targeting children

Organic soft drinks showed healthy growth continually over the review period, despite maintaining small retail sales. It experienced the highest retail value growth in 2018, thanks to rising demands for children’s organic 100% juice.

Prospects for organic fruit/vegetable juice are positive but a low birth rate constrain growth over the longer term

Nokchawon continued to be the strongest player in organic beverages over the review period, maintaining a far distance from the second largest player, Seoul Dairy Cooperative. The two companies play in different categories: Nokchawon is specialised in hot drinks, whilst Seoul Dairy focusses on soft drinks.

Seoul Dairy Cooperative launches new products with lower prices

Seoul Dairy Cooperative launched organic Achimae juice with three flavours in 2018 due to rising demands for organic juice. The new products claimed to use organic fruits grown without the use of any chemical fertiliser or agricultural pesticides.

The two leaders have different strategies for future growth

Nokchawon plans to develop new products in collaboration with cosmetics companies over the forecast period so that the company will take more opportunities to be closer to millennial consumers. Meanwhile, Seoul Dairy Cooperative will face a difficult challenge posed by declining sales of milk and juice, which have driven the majority of the company’s sales.
