Consumers in Spain are increasingly focused on the naturalness of food and sustainability issues. This is seeing greater consumer awareness of the potential benefits of consuming organic beverages.
The organic product lines of the large modern grocery chains increased rapidly during the review period. However, in 2020, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the space for new product launches was significantly reduced in retailers’ stores.
The competitive landscape of organic beverages in Spain remained fragmented, with only two players, Yogi Tea and Centros Comerciales Carrefour, holding double-digit retail value shares in 2021. Importantly, the leading grocery retailer in the country, Mercadona, is not present in organic beverages.
Millennials in Spain tend to be more conscious of sustainability and nutrition issues and, in this context, more open to trying or regularly consuming organic packaged food and beverages than other generations. Nonetheless, a growing number of local consumers across the generations perceive the consumption of organic food and beverages to be a significant preventative health measure.
In terms of the distribution of organic beverages, the category performance remains affected by the relatively limited availability of such products in grocery retailers. Nonetheless, the situation improved throughout the review period and the offer of organic beverages on retailers’ shelves is expected to continue to expand over the forecast period.
Retail volume and value (constant 2021 prices) sales of organic hot drinks are predicted to grow healthily over the forecast period. With daily life set to return to normal as the COVID-19 crisis eases, consumers will spend less time at home, so a portion of retail demand will shift back to bars, cafés and restaurants.

Organic Beverages
Certified organic products are those which have been produced, stored, processed, handled and marketed in accordance with precise technical specifications (standards) and certified as "organic" by a certification body such as the Soil Association in the UK, the European Union or the US Department of Agriculture. It is important to note that an organic label applies to the production process, ensuring that the product has been produced and processed in an ecologically sound manner. The organic label is therefore a production process claim as opposed to a product quality claim. Note: For organic products to be included, the organic aspect needs to form a significant part of the overall positioning/marketing of the product, including the organic certification label in the packaging. For product category definitions please refer to the definitions section (can be found under the "Help" section on Passport) for the respective system: Packaged Food, Hot Drinks, Soft Drinks.
