Despite the fact that there was extremely strong growth the year before, organic beverages witnessed very healthy growth in 2021. Consumers in the Netherlands continue to be interested in natural, pure and healthy beverages.
In the Netherlands, organic tea is a major category within organic beverages and also a category which continues to show strong growth. In 2021, it achieved the largest value sales and also the fastest value growth rate.
In organic coffee and organic juice, two other organic beverage categories with significant sales volumes, an organic claim is also viewed as a sign of quality. For coffee, consumers mostly associate organic coffee with offering a better taste and also a better choice for the environment.
Sales of organic beverages are projected to see healthy growth over the forecast period despite the strong growth in 2020 and subsequent dip in 2021. Growth of off-trade sales of organic beverages will be limited, however, by the fact that office workers will return to the office and the on-trade is likely to reopen fully.
The fact that Douwe Egberts Nederland BV launched a modest organic range for its L’Or coffee brand illustrates that the major players are also starting to take organic beverages seriously. Major players also see strong growth opportunities in organic tea, which is expected to stimulate significant new product development featuring healthy ingredients.
Over the forecast period, the range of organic beverage products available through mainstream retailers will further increase. Organic beverages will not be presented just in the health food section at major supermarkets or hypermarkets, but will increasingly be part of the regular beverage ranges.

Certified organic products are those which have been produced, stored, processed, handled and marketed in accordance with precise technical specifications (standards) and certified as "organic" by a certification body such as the Soil Association in the UK, the European Union or the US Department of Agriculture. It is important to note that an organic label applies to the production process, ensuring that the product has been produced and processed in an ecologically sound manner. The organic label is therefore a production process claim as opposed to a product quality claim. Note: For organic products to be included, the organic aspect needs to form a significant part of the overall positioning/marketing of the product, including the organic certification label in the packaging. For product category definitions please refer to the definitions section (can be found under the "Help" section on Passport) for the respective system: Packaged Food, Hot Drinks, Soft Drinks.See All of Our Definitions
