The organic concept has been present in packaged food and fresh food in Taiwan for many years. By now, organic food is widely recognised and accepted.
Taiwan’s population is ageing, although at a more moderate rate than many of its comparable neighbours in the Asia-pacific region. In addition, the country’s rising population and increasing income levels across the board are combining with the rapid spread of information about organic food via the internet.
Organic edible oils continues to contribute a significant proportion of overall sales of organic packaged food in Taiwan. The category continues to benefit from the numerous food contamination scandals affecting some of Taiwan’s leading edible oils brands between 2013 and 2015, the so-called “black oil” scandals.
During the review period, Qbebe became the first Taiwanese company offering certified organic prepared baby food. After establishing a very strong reputation for its brand by ensuring consistently high product quality and the regular launch of a diverse range of new products, September 2019 saw the company launch its very first retail store, in response to consumer demand.
At the end of the review period, the competitive environment in organic rice remained consolidated between six major players: Ying Chuan Food Co, Union Rice Co, Hohands Village Co, Yeedon Enterprises Co, Hua-Tung Rice Corp and Chyuan Shun Food Enterprise Co. This high degree of consolidation among relatively few players means strong and stable growth for the category, even at a time when its target consumer group is declining in size.
