Despite registering positive performance in both retail current value and volume terms in 2020, growth in organic packaged food in the Czech Republic was nevertheless slower than that seen across the review period, as the economic uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic forced more Czech consumers to reduce their budgets and prioritise value for money over premium products. Organic food is regarded as a luxury rather than a necessity, and although the healthy profile of organic foods resonates with a more health-conscious public, this category was one of the first to suffer from more careful spending habits.
Although overall growth in organic food slowed somewhat in 2020, organic baby food registered a stronger performance in both retail current value and volume terms than was seen in 2019. This was due to several factors, including the fact that more women are having children at an older age and they are more likely to have additional disposable income.
Hipp Czech sro remained the clear leading player in organic packaged food in retail value share terms in 2020. The international company’s leadership is due to its strength in organic baby food.
In organic dairy, milk and yoghurt will continue to generate interest among local consumers. The wide range of domestic brands on offer will be boosted by stronger penetration of private label organic products, which are perceived to offer good price/quality ratios by Czech consumers.
Retail volume consumption of organic packaged food is expected to revive somewhat over the forecast period, but continued economic uncertainty and weaker purchasing will hamper more dynamic growth for the foreseeable future. Private label will maintain its strong position in organic packaged food and gain value share, mainly in organic baby food, cream, milk, yoghurt, edible oils, pasta, rice and spreads.
E-commerce is set to continue to gain share across the forecast period, widening its consumer base, as more Czech households come to value the convenience of shopping online from the comfort of home. Discounters are also expected to perform well thanks in part to the increasing popularity of Lidl, which offers a wide range of good-quality brands at affordable prices.
