The economic impact of the pandemic has further boosted sales of value-for-money multipacks and other large formats, which were already gaining ground amid persistent economic uncertainty and price-sensitivity even prior to the arrival of the COVID-19 virus in the country. Sales in bigger packs spiked as consumers stockpiled staple items during the first wave of the virus as well as due to spending more time at home.
Pouches are gaining in popularity across a number of food packaging categories in Mexico. Pouches are seen as convenient, lightweight, less bulky and safer to handle than many alternative packaging solutions.
Glass bottles, which are heavily used in the returnable format, saw a sharp decline in unit volume sales in soft drinks in 2020 as consumers limited their trips to grocery stores and supermarkets because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of glass bottles was also impacted as consumers looked for one-way packaging owing to health and hygiene concerns.
Metal beverage cans, which had been showing strong growth rates in the alcoholic drinks industry prior to the pandemic, also managed to record a better performance in 2020 than the overall industry. Reasons include convenience in transportation and storage for at-home consumption of beer.
It is impossible to ignore the impact of the pandemic on beauty and personal care packaging in 2020, which went into decline in this year, after having posted positive growth rates in all the earlier years of the review period. Having said which, there were also variations in the performances among this industry’s categories in 2020, with bath and shower and skin care seeing positive growth, but all the other main categories recording declining sales in their packaging units.
As the demand for a circular economy continues to ramp up, brand owners are taking reusability and sustainability ever more seriously. In 2020, Unilever associated itself with Chilean company Algramo to reduce single-use plastic packaging via the application of refills for its Quix and Omo detergents.
