The pandemic forced the Singapore government to put in place so-called circuit breakers, which included lockdown measures, in order to limit the chain of viral transmission. This resulted in the closure of non-essential premises, such as foodservice establishments, many offices (with staff working from home), schools and other institutions.
2020 saw strong growth in sauces, dressings and condiments packaging as demand for many of these products spiked due to the huge shift towards preparing meals from scratch at home using fresh ingredients, rather than dining out in consumer foodservice outlets, which were forced to close for extended periods. The harsh realities of the pandemic and the strict approach taken to social distancing and home seclusion during the year led to consumers spending much of their time at home, which benefited various packaged food categories, especially sauces, dressings and condiments.
Sustainability concerns with regard to packaging waste continue to grow in hot drinks, with concern being raised about the application of single-use plastic, for example. Fresh ground coffee pods, the fastest-growing category within hot drinks, is not immune to scrutiny, particularly due to the perception that its single-serve packaging is wasteful.
Metal beverage cans is the dominant pack type for alcoholic drinks in the off-trade channel, meaning that this channel also accounts for the greatest use of metal beverage cans in Singapore, with this packaging solution more suitable for multipacks and easily stored in domestic refrigerators. On the other hand, glass bottles are popular in the on-trade channel, with the on-trade accounting for the majority of glass bottle sales.
As the consumer inclination towards natural and organic products increases, industry players are expected to launch innovative and sustainable packaging to attract consumers. Packaging labels and claims highlighting natural ingredients and sustainable sourcing are likely to boost sales for beauty and personal care products over the forecast period.
Pack types such as HDPE bottles, PET bottles and plastic pouches grew in home care in 2020, while other pack types, such as flexible plastic, recorded more disappointing performances, as manufacturers increasingly prefer the former pack types as they look to achieve their sustainability goals. In addition to being lighter than other plastic pack types, HDPE bottles, PET bottles and plastic pouches benefit from being easier to recycle, as well as offering the possibility of being made from recycled plastic.
