Polishes continued to benefit from the ongoing expansion of living and business space in Macedonia in 2018, which increasingly requires higher levels of maintenance, including the use of polishes. In contrast, the changing nature of certain surfaces and construction materials prevented more significant growth of polishes in 2018 as they require no or little maintenance using polishes.
The changing nature of furniture materials, most of which consist of wood or plywood and to some extent MDF (medium density furniture) contributed to a decline of furniture polish for the second consecutive year in 2018. Seating furniture is usually upholstered with textiles or natural or faux (eco) leather.
Innovation and frequent new product launches were important features throughout the review period. The leading players introduced many new brands which changed the face of polishes for the better.
Werner & Mertz maintained its lead in polishes with a moderately declining retail value share in 2018. It has significant penetration with its polishes brand portfolio, led by the shoe and furniture polish, Erdal, and its Emsal floor polish.
SC Johnson & Son ranked second within polishes in 2018. The company again recorded retail value growth in 2018 thanks to its continued penetration and the solid performance of its Pronto floor and furniture polish brand and Kiwi shoe polish brand.
Beyond the leading companies, including Ilirija and Bolton Manitoba, which also command significant value shares, polishes is characterised by smaller international players holding minimal value shares as well as single-digit value shares held by around a dozen smaller companies within others. The only two domestic companies competing in the category are Alkaloid ad Skopje with its Gloss brand and Andros Farm with its Avaks brand.
