Executive Summary

Nov 2018
PROSPECTS
New regulations aim to improve product quality

The category, especially processed meat, has seen an improvement in the quality products. One reason is that consumers are becoming more aware of the content and origin of the food products they consume.

Chilled processed meat benefits from innovation and the grilling trend

Chilled processed meat, which is by far the biggest category, performed positively in 2018 due to improving economic conditions and competition leading to innovation and new product launches. Among the new launches are products for grilling, including Kaiser Grill Mix Party, which contains three types of pork sausages in Bavarian, cheese and spicy variants, and Wiesbauer’s five new grill sausages in cheese, pepper, paprika, barbecue and honey-garlic flavours.

Processed seafood sees healthy retail volume and value growth

Processed seafood posted the fastest retail value sales growth in 2018, largely due to price increases, but also health awareness. Manufacturers increased prices due to rising production costs.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Pick Szeged faces growing competition

Processed meat manufacturer Pick Szeged remained the leading player overall in retail value sales in 2018. The long-time leader offers a wide selection of chilled processed meat in different price segments, from Pick (premium) to Família, which targets price-sensitive consumers.

Hering-Trade remains the key player in processed seafood

Hering-Trade remained the leading player in processed seafood in retail value sales terms in 2018. The company’s success is driven by its role as a distributor of several well-known brands, including Viking, Classic, Dal Mare, Neptun, Royal and Polarica.

Lower or seasonal competition from unpackaged variants

In terms of retail sales, packaged and unpackaged processed meat products are estimated to hold similar shares in Hungary, although a shift towards packaged versions has been observed. It should be noted that unpackaged processed meat and seafood products are excluded from Euromonitor International’s research.
