The listeria crisis mid-review period left a blemish on overall processed meat in Macedonia. As a result, most of the leading processed meat manufacturers have focused on launching safer packaged versions of chilled processed meat.
Processed seafood in Macedonia remained fairly underdeveloped in 2018. All seafood ranges witnessed a significant shortage of important brands.
Macedonia generally lags behind major global trends, and this was evident in the main trends affecting packaged food and local consumers’ eating habits. 2017 and 2018 witnessed a significant increase in chilled processed meat and seafood amidst the growing significance of tapas-inspired snacks.
The domestic company Pekabesko ad led processed meat and seafood in Macedonia in 2018 with a moderately growing value share. This was due to the strong performance and stable distribution of its diverse eponymous brand portfolio Pekabesko, which managed to expand its presence amidst fierce competition by domestic key players as well as new international entrants.
Pekabesko was closely followed by one of Macedonia’s largest meat processing companies - MIK Sveti Nikole doo, with a moderately declining value share in 2018. This was due to increased competition from several domestic and international players that managed to improve their distribution networks and reach out to a higher number of consumers nationwide.
In 2018, domestic companies dominated processed meat and seafood. Their competitive advantage comes from the very strong performance within processed meat (shelf stable, chilled and frozen), while domestic brands are mostly present within frozen processed seafood, since there is no domestic production of seafood in Macedonia which is a landlocked country.
